Featured are Maxine ATTERBURY’s ancestors.  She was the daughter of Winifred Pearl “Pearl” MATTHEWS and Jesse Ere ATTERBURY.  Both of their ancestors migrated to Oregon in 1852 and eventually settled in Douglas Co. Oregon.

Lemuel Green MATTHEWS

Alice SHOEMAKER was born 29 Apr 1861 in Shasta City, Shasta Co. CA.  She was the daughter of Mary Jane CHESTER (b. 1829 Ohio d. 26 Aug 1887 Oak Creek, Douglas Co. OR) and William SHOEMAKER (b. 1827 Ohio d. 24 Jun 1893 Glide, Douglas Co. OR).  She died 1 Apr 1945 in Dixonville, Douglas Co. OR.  Her maternal grandparents are believed to be Jesse CHESTER and Sarah NULL.  We are still searching for information on her paternal grandparents. 

Tilmon ATTERBURY was born 7 Apr 1856 in Yamhill Co. OR.  He was the son of Mary Emmaline “Emeline” AGEE and Greene Rufus Pinckney ATTERBURY.  He married Agnes SHAFF in 1875.  He died 2 Sep 1900 in Oak Creek, Douglas Co. OR of consumption.  His grandparents were Cordelia THORNTON & Isaac AGEE and Elizabeth BUTLER & Greenberry ATTERBURY.

Agnes SHAFF was born 5 Dec 1851 in Princeton, Scott Co. IA and  traveled to OR in 1852.  She was the daughter of Henry C. SHAFF (b. 23 Dec 1829 NY) and Adaline ADAMS.  Family lore says when her mother died on the OR Trail the family chewed up bits of bacon and spit them in her mouth to keep her alive until they could get to Oregon.  Agnes’ grandmother, Lucy Phinetta SHAFF DOOLITTLE TRASK also traveled with them to Oregon in 1852.  Agnes died in 1899 Douglas Co. OR of consumption.  Agnes was a descendant of Moses Aaron BLAKELY (b. 13 Jan 1758 CT d. 3 Jan 1837 NY), a Revolutionary War Soldier.

Lemuel MATTHEWS was born 29 Jan 1858 in Roseburg, Douglas Co. OR.  He was the son of Nancy Ann SIMMONS and Joshua MATTHEWS (MATHIS).  Lemuel was a farmer and a well known fiddler in his area.  He became a Seventh-day Adventist Christian in 1921.  He died 12 Dec 1929 in Roseburg, Douglas Co. OR.  His grandparents were Elizabeth SPEAR & Thomas Henry MATHIS and Mary TROUTMAN & Jonathan C. SIMMONS.
